Moonhawk Kim is the Director of Research-Practice Partnerships and Community Engagement. He is building the infrastructure for practitioners at Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) on the one hand and researchers and staff at UC Berkeley on the other to engage in productive collaborative partnership projects in service of equity and to improve educational outcomes.
Moonhawk was formerly Supervisor of Analytics at the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) where he used social science to improve education in the school district. His responsibilities included facilitating partnerships between practitioners in various departments throughout SFUSD on the one hand and academic researchers and evaluators on the other. He also worked to improve the social and technical data infrastructures to enable generation of actionable insights, improved communication of technical data and analysis to wide-ranging audiences, and carried out evaluations of SFUSD's programs and policies to enhance evidence-based decision making.
Moonhawk also teaches introductory quantitative analysis; data bootcamp; and data visualization at the University of San Francisco. Prior to his time at SFUSD, he was an assistant professor of political science at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 2007 to 2016, and published widely in academic journals on the political economy of global trade. Moonhawk, a native Californian, earned his PhD from Stanford University and BA from University of California, Berkeley.
