Every graduate of the Berkeley School of Education sets in motion a wave of possibility. A single educator inspires countless students over the course of a career; those students in turn influence their families, communities, and beyond. They are the dreamers, innovators, teachers, artists, and leaders of tomorrow, making waves of their own.

Our BSE faculty make all of this possible. Their research, teaching, and mentoring has a multiplier effect, and in a moment when public education faces unprecedented challenges, their work has never been more vital.

Across equity, innovation, access to excellence, and the public good, our faculty and graduates are creating opportunity and amplifying impact. This takes shape in our commitment to questioning historical and accepted practices, disrupting systemic inequities, turning the tide toward justice and possibility, and reshaping what education can be.

We don’t turn away from challenges — we rise to meet them. We seek clarity and transparent analysis through groundbreaking research and action across multiple contexts — from classrooms to boardrooms, from rural towns to urban neighborhoods.

This year’s impact report captures the reach and resonance of the Berkeley School of Education(link is external). Each story, data point, and initiative is evidence of what happens when education meets purpose. At the BSE, we are transforming the present and shaping the future, making waves that don’t just ripple outward, but rise up to foster opportunity and high-quality learning for all.

Sincerely,

As we reflect on our progress this past year, the theme of this report — Building a Brighter Future — resonates deeply with our purpose at the Berkeley School of Education (BSE). Here we cultivate courageous educators and researchers committed to transformational change in education.

The health of our schools, communities, and democracy depends on the strength of our educational systems, making our work to develop educational professionals, interventions, and research more urgent than ever before. We are equipping todayʼs educators to actively advance equity in their classrooms, schools, and communities through research-based development and professional learning. And we are extending the reach of our work through our new Educational Sciences major and bachelor's of science degree, extended partnerships, and our immersive virtual classroom — an exciting learning space laced with cutting edge technology.

Please read Berkeley School of Education's 2024 Impact report to know more about our accomplishments this year and our priorities for the future.

Our education system — perhaps our most promising engine of social change — is embattled. We face a teacher and school leader shortage that affects student learning; culture wars related to race, gender, and sexuality intended to distract us and marginalize certain populations; continuing gun violence that breeds an atmosphere of fear; an ongoing student mental health crisis; and persistent and uneven school funding. These challenges to education are challenges to our society.

And yet here at Berkeley, we are hopeful. We’re hopeful because at this world-class public university we are training teachers, leaders, and researchers who are deeply committed to equity to transform education. We are hopeful because our innovation in research and practice directly and positively impacts students, schools, and systems.

In my role as the new dean at Berkeley School of Education, I am dedicated to doubling down on the impact the school makes on the lives of our students, communities, and profession. I look forward to working together.

Never in the last 75 years have Americans been so focused, simultaneously, on problems of inequality, economic security, racial injustice, civic disunity, and even our democracy itself.

The Berkeley School of Education 2022 Impact and Vision report reflects on how we have navigated these challenging times for public education and envision a more equitable future. At the BSE, our focus is to "educate like democracy depends on it." I believe it does.

Thank you for being part of our BSE community. We are all in this together.

Sincerely,

Christopher Edley, Jr.
