Dr. Garcia discusses the federal designation of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and the deeper concept she coined of "servingness," which she defines as “intentional effort to think about how the population needs something different.” She advocates for building a "graduate-going culture" to support first-generation students considering graduate school, while also emphasizing the importance of supportive environments that meet the complex needs of the diverse Latinx community.
