UC Berkeley’s School of Education is changing its name after more than 100 years in order to reflect its planned expansion of offerings, including a suite of online professional development courses and credentials.

The Graduate School of Education is now the Berkeley School of Education (BSE).

The new name more accurately reflects the School of Education’s mission of equity-focused education at all levels. On a practical level, there is an ongoing teacher shortage in California and the School of Education is working to do more to help reverse that trend. More broadly, the School of Education will continue providing and cultivating the very best in educational scholarship, innovation and professional leadership.

The degrees currently offered by the BSE include:

  • a minor in education for UC Berkeley undergraduates
  • Master’s in education
  • Master’s in education, plus California teaching credential
  • Master’s in education, plus a California administrative credential
  • Doctorate in education, EdD
  • Doctorate in education, PhD
  • Doctorate in education, PhD, with an emphasis in Mathematics and Science education
  • Doctorate in education, PhD, with a school psychology certification
  • Joint Doctorate in Special Education (with San Francisco State University)

The new name is effective immediately.
