Year in Review 2021

Abstract:

Welcome to the 2021 Leadership Programs Year in Review. We are pleased to update you about our activities and impact across all Leadership Programs as well as share news of significant expansion.

The year ended on a particularly high note: we received funding to provide significant leadership in California for Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK). Through our Leadership Programs and in particular via the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy (21CSLA), we will develop a framework, materials, and training to ensure this transformational UPK program is informed by a commitment to equity, inclusion, and access for the state’s children.

In 2021, the promise of 21st Century California School Leadership State Center and Regional Academy is emerging as we have been able to extend the work of the Leadership Programs to serve a wider range of needs to increase equity and achievement outcomes for students across the state. We also welcomed 30 new students to Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) Cohort 21 and 12 students to the first cohort of Leaders for Equity and Democracy (LEAD). Our Leadership Support Program (LSP)  continues to serve 85 new administrators statewide to earn their Professional Clear Credential.

This year, we’ve also welcomed Interim Dean Christopher Edley to the School of Education. He is a leader who has made an extraordinary impact on justice, rights, and equity across disciplines throughout his career and will no doubt do the same in this new role. Dean Edley hasn’t wasted a moment and is poised to launch a major campaign for the next UC Berkeley School of Education.

Finally, as the COVID-19 pandemic persists into 2022, we continue to uplift the dedication and commitment of our students and alumni to courageously lead in public schools, creating more equitable learning environments for our most vulnerable students. Together, and with our expanded work, we look forward to our continued collaboration to fulfill the promise of public education.
