BSE Principles of Community

  • We value everyone in our community. We are committed to creating a safe environment where each person can show up every day exactly as they are and be open and ready to learn, change, adapt, and grow. We value them as individuals and for their contributions to our community.

  • We lead by centering our Berkeley School of Education community. We prioritize a safe and inclusive environment by centering community members’ unique experiences and perspectives in all that we do, from classroom instruction to our decision-making processes. This is critical to our work, education, and identity as a school.

  • We strive for the prevention of harm. As a community we have a responsibility to prevent physical and psychological harm, violence, threats, harassment, and discrimination in the BSE while creating an environment where everyone can learn, grow, thrive, and achieve their goals.

  • We promote safety. Every person in our community deserves to feel safe. If threats to safety emerge, they will be examined and addressed.

  • We practice an ethic of care and kindness. We foster an environment of belonging and an ethic of care. We promote care, kindness, and wellbeing through our actions, expectations, and engagement with one another.

  • We value open, respectful, and inclusive communication. How we communicate with one another matters. We set the stage for positive and productive working and learning relationships.

  • We respect the unique experiences and perspectives of all community members. Our respect for one another is demonstrated through our social interactions, our conversations, our commitment to active listening and generative discussion as well as through our written communication.

  • We engage with one another positively and uplift each other’s pursuit of their work. We try to prevent harm that can come from communication by teaching conflict resolution, compassionate dialogue of differences, and needs-based resolutions. When harm has occurred, it is recognized that we will be resourceful and use strategies such as restorative practices, nonviolent communication, courageous conversations about race, and others in order to promote healing, reconciliation, and justice-centered peace.

  • We consistently set and uphold community agreements. Our agreements function as expectations for all members of the community. They serve as “community agreements” so that everyone knows what to expect in communications and interactions.
