Kevin Quintero (He/Him/His) is a PhD candidate in Policy, Politics, and Leadership at UC Berkeley’s School of Education. Kevin’s research interests are using methodological and theoretical approaches to reveal the causes of political, social, and educational inequalities. His current research examines how the expansion of voting rights in California creates opportunities for minority groups to increase representation on school boards and influence educational policymaking. In particular, his dissertation shows how the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) has reshaped electoral systems for school board positions, creating opportunities for Latinxs to gain representation on a school board in a suburban school district in San Diego.
In addition to his research interests, Kevin has served as the co-chair of the Graduate Association of Latinx Students (GALS) and is currently the Graduate Programming Coordinator, working with the Chicanx/Latinx Student Development Office to improve the graduate experience for minoritized students. As a student, he has devoted his time to mentoring students and serving as a liaison between graduate students and campus administration. Kevin earned both a Master’s in Education and a Bachelor’s degree with majors in Political Science and American Studies from UC Berkeley.
Kevin is from Southern California and is the son of two immigrant parents. He is first in his family to attend a four-year university and graduate school. In his spare time, Kevin enjoys mentoring and connecting with students interested in higher education and research.
