Dr. Chan’s research advances educational equity by studying practices, systems, and school contexts that support culturally diverse students. Her work centers on two primary areas: school-based social-emotional and behavioral assessments and services, and intergroup interactions in K–12 educational settings. In school-based social-emotional and behavioral assessments, she critically examines existing assessments, particularly their effectiveness and fairness in identifying the strengths and needs of students from minoritized backgrounds. She also works to translate school-based social-emotional and behavioral research into equitable practice within the school system. Her second line of inquiry explores how individual, interpersonal, and contextual factors shape intergroup interactions in schools, with the goal of promoting inclusive and welcoming learning environments for all students. Grounded in interdisciplinary theories and diverse methodologies, Dr. Chan’s scholarship informs the implementation of universal and targeted supports that advance educational equity and disrupt systemic inequities.
Her research is published in various journals, including Educational Psychologist; Developmental Psychology; Child Development; Journal of School Psychology; School Psychology Review; and School Psychology. She serves on the editorial boards of School Psychology; School Psychology Review; and Psychology in the Schools. She is also the recipient of the APA Division 16 Lightner Witmer Award (2026), the Trainers of School Psychologists Early Career Award (2026), the APA Division 16 Outstanding Dissertation Award (2023), and the Society for the Study of School Psychology Early Career Research Award (2024).
