Richard Zapien is a Principal Leadership Institute graduate and comes to the School of Education with 25 years of K–12 experience, having served as an elementary and middle school teacher, instructional coach, site leader, and central office administrator with the San Francisco Unified School District. Mr. Zapien currently serves as the Coordinator for the California Computer Science Project (CCSP), a collaboration between the BSE Leadership Programs, the Kapor Center, and UCLA's STEM+C3 Teacher Education Program. The CCSP engages with a diverse network of K–12 educators across California to examine the enrollment disparities in K–12 computer science and design the systems and structures to provide all students with equitable and socially-responsible computer science education. Passionate about school leadership and mentoring new leaders, Richard also leads programs through 21CSLA, including the Latino Leaders Affinity Network, and courses with the Social Justice Teacher Leader Certificate program.
