Equity Leadership Now! hosts conversations with equity-conscious leaders from pre-K through university settings who transform structures and strategies for educating students, particularly for those who are marginalized.
In this special episode of Equity Leadership Now!, Dr. Jabari Mahiri and members of the 21CSLA professional learning group discuss the core concepts from Dr. George Theoharis's influential work, The School Leaders Our Children Deserve: Seven Keys to Equity, Social Justice, and School Reform. Each guest from the 21CSLA professional learning group explores one of Theoharis's seven attributes of successful social justice leaders, relating these principles to Equity Leadership Now! episode 10, Leading with Compassion in Polarizing Times with Dr. Pedro Noguera.
The School Leaders Our Children Deserve identifies seven attributes that are crucial for social justice leadership:
- Acquire broad, reconceptualized consciousness/knowledge/skill base
- Possess core leadership traits
- Advance inclusion, access, and opportunity for all
- Improve the core learning context--both the teaching and the curriculum
- Create a climate of belonging
- Increase student learning
- Sustain oneself professionally and personally
Overall, the discussion emphasizes the importance of compassionate, sustained leadership in education, a deep commitment to equity, and a clear focus on improving learning outcomes for all students. “Compassion is that move toward action, and so that's where I believe the power lies in reconceptualizing our consciousness,” said 21CSLA team member, Stefanie Baker. “Lots of us feel things, and we can relate to things, but it's that movement to action that pushes us toward supporting leaders to become the leaders children deserve.”
